Welcome students

August 29, 2016

Dear families of the 4/5 Seminar class,

Welcome to a new year at Hawthorne Elementary! This year our over-arching theme will be Reflections on Responsibility and Equity. This study will include art, history, sociology, anthropology, and science. In support of these studies we will participate in a trip to the Getty Museum (probably over-night for the 5th graders) and many day-study trips. Additionally, we will focus on the study of water in science, continuing testing water throughout the County, and studying various biomes. Important announcements will be posted through yahoo!Groups. Please be sure you have access to the Group website on a daily basis. It will be a critical part of our class communication. We will be switching to the Google system SOON!!!(www.hawthorneseminarsd.com), but for now, we’re still using Yahoo. To subscribe to the adult group, go to HawthorneSeminar-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

Our school website, www.sandiegounified.org/schools/hawthorne, has calendar information that will be helpful throughout the year. Additionally, our school uses the electronic backpack system ‘Peachjar’. You’ll see more information about that as the year progresses. Please check your child’s calendar regularly. This week there is a paper calendar. Next week, we should be entirely electronic, and the calendar will be linked from the Google site. Please note that homework, while generally assigned daily, can often be done ‘ahead’. This is intended to support those children with obligations, lessons and activities which preclude a lengthy daily homework time. My expectation is that in addition to assigned homework, your child will read and write a total of an hour each day (7 hours a week). A reading log will be initiated, and writing will be tracked by volume. There will be many opportunities to volunteer this year with the class, the school, and the Hawthorne Seminar Foundation. You’ll find notices on the YahooGroups sites, via email, and the school site. Please be certain to fill out the Volunteer form. (It says ‘optional’, but we NEED you!) Standards of behavior in the class include an expectation of polite, respectful behavior with each child providing their best efforts to further their own learning. If we have issues or difficulties with behavior or effort, you will be contacted.

Thank you in advance for your support in helping me to create a wonderful learning opportunity for your child! Sincerely, Tricia Smith
